The Simplest of Sales Building Tactics

Today, coming home from a long weekend of mountain biking in Oregon I passed by Willamette Valley Vineyards. It looked like an inviting place and I do love wine, so I pulled off the highway for a visit. It was an unplanned stop and a bit inconvenient since I wanted to beat rush hour, but the thought of bringing home some wine from Oregon compelled me.
I was a bit early – about 15 minutes before opening. As I walked through the unlocked doors I was greeted with a “We are not open, but if you want to wander around you can”. Not very welcoming, but I wandered in silence for what felt like an eternity. The tasting room was small and there wasn’t much to look at – so after an awkward 7 minutes or so I left. I got in my car empty handed and drove away – with a bad taste in my mouth and a question on my mind “I wonder why any business would let that happen?”.
The whole situation could have been very different if only the sales person would have greeted me with a “Hi there, Welcome to Willamette Vineyards, I have a couple things to do before I can open – but let me get you a little taste of my favorite Chardonnay to enjoy while you are waiting”.
It is such a simple thing to do – make someone feel welcome. A smile, a kind word, a nice gesture. It is one of the simplest sales building tactics there is!
